March 2, March 9, & March 23 - Cord Cutting Workshops
State Representatives Randy Hunt (R-Sandwich), Sarah Peake (D-Provincetown), Will Crocker (R-Barnstable), and Tim Whelan (R-Brewster), and state Senator Julian Cyr (D-Truro) announced that they scheduled a series of cord-cutting workshops across Cape Cod. The first session is slated for March 2, at the Sandwich Council on Aging. The Yarmouth South Library will host the second on March 9; the final, at the Harwich Council on Aging, on March 23. All seminars will be free and open to the public.
Attendees can expect to learn more about over-the-air programming, streaming equipment (such as Apple TV and Roku), and streaming services (such as Sling TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and CBS All Access). Consumers will also discover how they can use their internet connection to eliminate their landline telephone service.
The workshops are an extension of the Cape legislators' efforts to invigorate Barnstable County's residential high-speed internet service sector. In coordination with local leaders and stakeholders, they are exploring routes through which competition can be promoted, consumer costs lowered, and access to high-speed internet expanded. The workshops are collaborations between the Cape-area legislators, local senior centers and councils on aging, and libraries.
"I applaud Representative Hunt for taking the lead for our delegation on scheduling these Cord Cutting Workshops," said Sen. Julian Cyr. "Our residents on the Cape and Islands deserve more competition for access to cable and internet. In the absence of Verizon FIOS service and other traditional provider options in our region, technology is now giving more people access to streaming TV content and on-demand options that provide an alternative to Comcast. I believe attendees will find this opportunity to be very informative."
"This is an important issue for many of my constituents," said Rep. Sarah Peake. "Rep. Hunt has done an incredible amount of work on this and now I'm pleased to work with him to sponsor these sessions."
